The prophet Samuel was one of the premier prophets in Israel and under his tenure, Israel experienced a mighty revival. He was compared to Moses and we’re told that not one of his words fell to the ground. It was he who presided over the first bible college in Scripture and the school he established was housed in a town called Ramah.

I’m guessing it was called the School of Prophets because the students were called sons of the prophets. They were trained to basically tap and flow in the prophetic and they attained such a high degree of sensitivity that it seemed nothing was hidden from them. So great was its influence that it began to shape and affect the entire spiritual landscape of Israel.

Ramah became such a powerful portal that just being in close proximity to the school would cause a person to come under the influence of the power of God. If you recall, on one occasion, Saul sought to arrest David when the latter had sought refuge in Ramah.

Even an evil and bloodthirsty king couldn’t resist falling under the influence of the Spirit and he was completely helpless and started prophesying when he came into the vicinity of Ramah. The spirit of prophecy was so great over the school that it affected everyone.

Can you just imagine for a moment what it must have been like to be under such an anointing 24/7? The sons of the prophets were constantly prophesying and seeing visions and they came alive to the Spirit. By the time Elijah came on the scene, hundreds, if not thousands of young men had joined their ranks.

We know this because later on, Jezebel killed hundreds of them. Only 100 were preserved by a godly official named Obadiah, in Ahab’s courts. But it was Elijah that took over the mantle and responsibility of the sons of the prophets.

Think about it. Israel had not seen such a powerful prophet since the days of Moses. And under Elijah’s mantle, the school proliferated. At the same time, the nation of Israel was in deep sin and backsliding. But remember that it’s in times of great darkness that God raises men of great stature. Satan realised that if he didn’t do something to counteract this, the whole of Israel would be transformed. So he raised Jezebel up to oppose what God was doing.

It’s interesting she started her own ‘School of Prophets’. They were those who ate at Jezebel’s table – 400 prophets of Baal and 450 prophets of Asherah. And what was that all about? It was to counteract what God was doing through the sons of the prophets.

If we’re ever going to see revival come, we must break the status quo. The same old, same old cannot cut it any longer. Revival can only come through a company of intercessors who are committed to praying until something breaks open. We must be an Upper Room company that will become a flashpoint for revival.

I know there are great churches all around the world with great programmes, but programmes have never opened heaven. Only an Upper Room company can, and that has to be our calling. The calling for this company of people is a calling for revival.

And this is why we’re having the School of Prophetic Ministry. We want to raise the sons of the prophets and touch the deeps of God. This is our calling and it’s in our DNA.
