February 2019 was an interesting month for me. I received not one – but two – watches. Instinctively, I began to seek its spiritual and prophetic significance as I believe the Lord is saying something to me through this. And so my mind began to run through all the ‘watch-related’ Scriptures for clues.
Is the Lord asking me to ‘watch and pray’ more (Matt 26:41)? Or am I to be ‘His watchman on the wall’ (Isa 62:6)? Maybe it’s about learning to ‘number my days’ (Ps 90:12) or to learn more about moving in ‘times and seasons’ (1 Chron 12:32) like the sons of Issachar, since one was a classic retro-looking watch and the other a modern high-tech watch. Or perhaps the Lord is bringing me into a ‘time of refreshing’ (Acts 3:19)? Or the new watches replacing the old ones could be symbolic that a ‘spiritual upgrade’ is coming my way soon?
However, there wasn’t a witness within me that any of these Scriptures were the answer. A few days later, it suddenly became clear to me what I felt the Lord was saying – I didn’t have just one watch, but two watches, meaning the Lord ‘watches’ over me! Yes, I know this ‘revelation’ may sound queer or funny – I can imagine you giggling away while reading this blog. But I knew in my heart that this was it. God just wanted to tell me that He cares for me. Nothing really spiritual or prophetic – it’s supernaturally natural.
But let me share with you the greater significance of this testimony which I trust will bless you as it did me.
1. God answers our desires too!
Through this, I realised that God doesn’t just answer our needs or wants. He answers our desires too. My current watch is still working perfectly. It’s just a little bit laggy in response time and the battery life isn’t performing as well as before, which is normal for electronic gadgets over time.
Hence, I was pondering ‘within my heart’ that maybe it’d be nice to have a new one. But I didn’t entertain that idea much as I was happy with my current one (which is another testimony on its own). Hence, this ‘desire’ to own a new watch didn’t even make it to my prayer list and neither did I tell anyone about it. It’s just not as important as my other priorities on hand.
2. God doesn’t think like us
Do I have needs? Yes! Do I have wants? Yes! But why did God skip these two more important categories and answer the least important one? He chose to answer ‘one of my desires’ which I wasn’t even contending for. That baffled me. You see, a typical sequence is to answer all the ‘needs’ (or necessities) first, and when that has been met, we look into the ‘wants’ next. We’re taught that way, especially when it comes to managing our finances and limited resources. Prioritise! Prioritise! Prioritise!
Has God gotten the priorities wrong? I asked the Lord ‘why’ and He replied, “If I can answer your desires, you can trust Me to take care of your needs and wants!” Wow! Something in me shifted that day. I felt I’ve been ushered into another level of faith. God is my source and resource for all things. What’s ‘logical’ to Him may not be logical to us. God doesn’t think like us. We need to think more like Him!
3. If God’s all you have, then you’ve all you need!
God introduced Himself to Abraham in Gen 17:1 as ‘El Shaddai’ – The All-Sufficient One. In your walk with God, have you experienced Him as your ‘All in All’ just as Abraham did? King David declared in Ps 16:5, “Lord, you alone are my inheritance…” That means to make God your ‘needs, wants, and desires’! Do you need Him more than the air you breathe? Do you want Him more than the next upgrade of your car, house, career or education? Do you desire Him more than fulfilling your wish list or bucket list? We sometimes chase after the miracles more than the God of miracles.
This is how I’d sum up my ‘watch’ experience – “Make God the utmost delight and pleasure of your life, and He will provide for you what you desire the most.” Ps 37:4 (TPT) God has a ‘picture of you’ on the palm of His hands (Is 49:16). That’s how much He’s thinking about you. Would you make Him your desire today? May the Lord who ‘watches’ over me, ‘watch’ over you. Shalom!
